Picking the wrong characters early in Wizardry Variants Daphne is a real problem. You burn resources, stall dungeon progress, and end up backtracking when you realize your party can’t hold up. This list tells you exactly who to build, who to skip, and why — so you can make smart decisions from the start.
This article covers a current tier list from S to D, the reasoning behind each ranking, how to build a working party, and who to target if you’re rerolling.
How This Tier List Works
Tiers run from S down to D. S-tier means the character is among the best in the current meta. D-tier means they’re generally not worth building if you have better options available.
Rankings here are based on four things: SP and MP efficiency, exploration utility, combat role, and long-run dungeon survivability. Those factors matter most in Wizardry Variants Daphne because deep dungeon runs punish resource waste hard.
No tier list is official. This article cross-references multiple community sources, with Roonby’s February 2025 update as the primary reference, and ProGameGuides and LDPlayer used to check for consensus. Where sources disagree, that’s noted clearly.
One important point: lower-tier units are not useless. They can clear content, especially early on. They’re just less efficient than top picks, which means more retreats, more resource drain, and slower progress over time.
S-Tier Characters — The Best Units in the Game Right Now
These four characters appear in S-tier across multiple independent sources. They are the safest long-term investments, and if you’re rerolling, these are your targets.
Debra / Deborah (Thief, Beastfolk)
Debra is the best exploration unit in the game. Her SP regeneration works like a battery for long dungeon runs — she keeps the party functioning when other units would force you to retreat and rest. That alone saves a huge amount of time and resources. She also brings strong overall exploration utility that no other Thief matches at her level.
Adam (Mage, Elf)
Adam combines high magic power with strong action speed. That makes him the most reliable offensive mage in the game — he hits hard and he hits consistently. If you need a damage dealer who doesn’t let you down in long fights, Adam is the pick.
Wanderer Lanaville (Knight, Human)
Wanderer Lanaville is the best tank currently available. She provides strong defense and team recovery that other Knights don’t match. If your party is taking too much damage or struggling to survive deep floors, she’s the fix. Note that this is the Wanderer variant specifically — she’s meaningfully stronger than the standard Lanaville version.
Alice (Priest/Cleric, Elf)
Alice extends buff and debuff duration. That might sound simple, but it multiplies the value of every other support skill in your party. Buffs last longer, debuffs stick longer, and your whole team becomes more effective. She’s the best support unit in the game and is confirmed S-tier across all major sources.
A-Tier and B-Tier Characters Worth Considering
These characters aren’t quite at the top, but several of them are strong enough to carry you through most content — especially if you don’t have every S-tier unit yet.
Ekaterina (Mage, Human) — A-Tier
Ekaterina has one of the largest MP pools in the game, which means she can keep casting through long fights without running dry. Her most unique trait is ambush nullification — she effectively turns off random surprise attacks, which reduces wipe risk and saves healing resources. She’s rated A-tier in most sources and is an excellent flex pick alongside or instead of Adam.
Lanaville — non-Wanderer Variant (Knight, Human) — A-Tier
The standard Lanaville is a solid tank and healer hybrid. She’s not as strong as the Wanderer variant, but she’s reliable and worth building if Wanderer Lanaville isn’t available to you yet.
Marianne (Priest/Monk, Human) — B-Tier
Marianne is an MP-efficient healer, meaning she gets more healing output per point of MP spent. That makes her a strong budget option for players who need a dependable healer without waiting for Alice. Roonby places her in B-tier, while ProGameGuides rates her higher in A-tier — the disagreement reflects ongoing meta refinement, so treat her as a solid pick either way.
Gerulf (Fighter, Dwarf) — B-Tier
Gerulf is a high-offense frontliner with a strong critical rate. He hits hard and works well in the front row. The reason he’s not higher is that he’s more situational than S-tier picks — he excels at damage but doesn’t bring the same exploration or support value. ProGameGuides rates him A-tier, Roonby puts him at B — use him confidently but don’t build your entire strategy around him.
Gerard (Knight, Human) — B-Tier
Gerard is a dependable frontline tank with good evasion. He won’t replace Wanderer Lanaville, but he’s a fair substitute if she’s out of reach. Pair him with a strong healer and he holds up well in most dungeon scenarios.
Red Beard (Dwarf Cleric) — B-Tier
Red Beard is a versatile offense-support hybrid. He doesn’t top any single category, but his flexibility makes him worth building for specific party setups where you need both damage contribution and healing coverage from one slot.
C-Tier and D-Tier Characters to Avoid for Serious Runs
These characters aren’t completely useless, but investing heavily in them will cost you in the long run. If you’re trying to push deep into dungeons efficiently, there are better options.
C-Tier: Situational but Weak
- Barbara (Knight, Beastfolk): Offers SP cost reduction, but lacks the standout impact of top Knights. Fine for casual play, not for optimized runs.
- Gandolfo (Fighter, Human): Also brings SP cost reduction, but doesn’t contribute enough in combat to justify a roster slot over stronger fighters.
- Valdor (Priest, Dwarf): Covers magical defense, which has niche value, but his overall utility is too limited compared to Alice or even Marianne.
These three are consistently rated C-tier by Roonby and sit in B or C across other sources. They can fill gaps early on but should be replaced when you have better options.
D-Tier: Generally Skip These
- Eckart
- Asha
- Dino
- Alex
- Generic Elf Mage
These characters are rated the weakest across all sources reviewed. They bring low-impact abilities, limited utility, and inconsistent performance in combat. Avoid building them for any serious dungeon progression. If you pull them early, use them temporarily if needed, but prioritize replacing them as soon as possible.
How to Build a Working Party
A strong party in Wizardry Variants Daphne needs to cover four things: tanking, healing, damage, and exploration utility. Here’s how to apply the tier list to your actual lineup.
Optimized Party (S-Heavy)
- Wanderer Lanaville — frontline tank, absorbs damage, supports recovery
- Adam — primary damage dealer, fast and powerful magic offense
- Alice — support and healing, extends all buffs/debuffs for the whole team
- Debra — exploration utility and SP regeneration, keeps the party going longer
- Ekaterina or Gerulf — flex slot for extra damage or magic coverage
This lineup covers every major role and handles resource management efficiently. It’s the setup that most sources point toward as the strongest consistent party.
Budget Party (A/B-Tier Units)
- Gerard or Lanaville — reliable frontline tank
- Marianne or Red Beard — healer or healer-support hybrid
- Ekaterina — mage with ambush protection and solid MP pool
- Barbara or Gandolfo — SP cost reduction if Debra isn’t available
This party clears content but requires more caution. You’ll retreat more often and use more resources, especially without Debra’s SP regeneration. It works — just expect slower progress.
Who to Target When Rerolling
If you’re at the start of the game and considering rerolling, focus on pulling these four characters in order of priority:
- Debra — her SP regen changes how long you can stay in dungeons
- Adam — reliable, consistent magic damage from the start
