Most players in Last War: Survival make the same mistake early on. They spread resources across five or six heroes, then hit a wall in arena or late-game content where it actually matters. By then, it is expensive to fix.

This guide tells you exactly which heroes are worth investing in right now, what roles they fill, how to build teams for both PvP and PvE, and how to prioritize upgrades depending on where you are in the game.

The Hero Roles You Need to Know First

Before picking anyone, you need to understand the four core roles. Every tier recommendation below only makes sense if you know what job each hero is doing.

    • Tank: Sits in the front row and absorbs incoming damage. Protects your backline so your damage dealers can work.
    • AoE Damage Dealer: Hits multiple enemies at once. Best for clearing groups and weakening the enemy team quickly.
    • Single-Target Burst: Focuses all damage on one enemy. Used to take out priority threats like carries or healers.
    • Crowd Control / Support: Disables enemies or fills utility gaps. Prevents the other team from using abilities at the wrong time.

Think of it like a classic RPG party. Your tank is the knight holding a shield. Your AoE carry is the mage clearing the room. Your burst DPS is the assassin going straight for the boss. Your CC hero is the one locking enemies down so nobody gets in the way.

Every competitive team needs at least one tank and one reliable damage dealer. Everything else builds from there.

The Best Heroes in Last War: Survival Right Now

Based on Season 6 meta data and 2026-updated tier lists, these five heroes sit at the top. If you are deciding where to spend your resources, start here.

    Kimberly — AoE Carry

Kimberly is the strongest AoE damage dealer in the current meta. She works especially well in tank-heavy formations because she can hit the whole enemy team at once. Her damage scales well into late game, which makes her a safe long-term investment. She is also the first hero to receive an Awakening upgrade in Season 6, which pushes her power up significantly early in the season.

    DVA — Single-Target Burst

DVA specializes in eliminating one target fast. She is the best option for boss content because she focuses all her damage on a single large HP pool. In PvP, she is used to take out the most dangerous enemy hero before they can act. DVA receives her Awakening in Week 3 of the season, making her a priority once Kimberly is set up.

    Williams — Tank

Williams is the default front-row anchor for most competitive squads. He absorbs punishment, protects the backline, and buys enough time for Kimberly and DVA to do their jobs. Most top-tier PvP lineups are built around him. If you can only focus on one tank, Williams is the one.

Murphy — Flex / Support Hybrid

Murphy fits into teams that already have the core three locked in. He works as a flexible damage and support piece depending on the matchup. Once Kimberly, DVA, and Williams are in place, Murphy is the next upgrade worth pursuing.

    Schuyler — Crowd Control

Schuyler is the top CC pick for PvP. His job is to shut down enemy carries before they can use their ultimates. In arena, this timing is the difference between winning and losing a close match. He is less critical in PvE but very important once you start hitting competitive PvP content.

Note: These rankings reflect Season 6 and 2026-updated data. Balance patches can and do shift individual hero values over time. Always check the update date on any tier list you use.

The Strongest Team Formations You Can Build

    Standard High-End PvP Lineup

This is the canonical competitive lineup across Season 6 tier lists:

    • Front row: Williams
    • Back row: Kimberly, DVA, Schuyler, Murphy or Fiona

Here is how it works in practice. Williams holds the front line and takes damage so your back row stays safe. Kimberly fires AoE into the enemy team, weakening multiple heroes at once. DVA targets the most dangerous single enemy and eliminates them quickly. Schuyler locks down enemy carries so they cannot use their abilities at full strength.

The fifth slot goes to Murphy or Fiona depending on what your team needs. If you are running low on sustain, lean toward healing or utility. If the matchup calls for more damage, take the extra offense.

This lineup is resource-intensive. It is the benchmark for what a top-tier squad looks like, but building it takes time, especially for free-to-play accounts.

    PvE Boss Team

For boss content, keep Williams and DVA as your core. Williams keeps the team alive long enough to cycle through abilities. DVA directs all her burst into the boss’s large HP pool, which is where single-target damage matters most.

Fill the remaining three slots with sustain heroes, buffs, or AoE damage for clearing adds around the boss. Use the best available heroes in your roster for those slots. You do not need a perfect team to clear PvE — the Williams and DVA core does most of the heavy lifting.

    Early-Game or F2P Lineup

If you do not have all five S-tier heroes yet, focus on this structure:

    1. One solid tank (Williams when available)
    2. One AoE damage dealer (Kimberly when available)
    3. One single-target DPS
    4. Two flexible support or utility heroes

Do not spread upgrades across every hero you pull. Pick your best available option in each role and pour resources into those. You will clear more content with two strong heroes than five mediocre ones.

PvP vs PvE — Which Heroes Work Where

Some heroes shine in one mode and fall flat in another. Knowing this saves you from investing in the wrong direction.

Kimberly, DVA, and Williams are strong in both PvP and PvE. That is exactly why they are the safest investments in the game right now. Upgrading them never feels wasted, regardless of which mode you are focused on.

Schuyler is primarily a PvP investment. His crowd control is critical in arena, where timing and ability disruption decide close matches. In PvE, where enemies do not use abilities in the same way, his value drops. Do not prioritize him over the core three if PvE is your main focus.

Murphy and Fiona are flexible. They adjust based on what the team needs. In PvP, they fill sustain or damage gaps. In PvE, they can provide buffs or utility during boss fights.

If you are a free-to-play player with limited resources, build around the PvE-and-PvP crossover heroes first. Kimberly, DVA, and Williams give you value everywhere. Specialized PvP picks like Schuyler can wait until your core is solid.

How to Prioritize Upgrades Without Wasting Resources

The biggest mistake in Last War is upgrading too many heroes at once. Here is a simple order to follow:

    1. Get Williams to a competitive level first. No team works without a functioning tank.
    2. Focus on Kimberly next. AoE damage is useful in almost every game mode.
    3. Build DVA third. Her single-target burst becomes critical for bosses and PvP priority targeting.
    4. Add Schuyler once the core three are stable. He is a PvP multiplier, not a foundation.
    5. Fill the flex slot last with Murphy or Fiona based on your team’s specific gaps.

If you are a free-to-play player who cannot unlock these heroes immediately, use the same role framework to evaluate what you do have. Pick the best tank, the best AoE hero, and the best single-target DPS available to you, and upgrade those rather than spreading resources thin.

Awakening is also worth planning around. Kimberly’s Awakening unlocks in Week 1 of the season, DVA’s in Week 3. If you are pushing into competitive play, time your resources to make the most of those windows.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Running no tank: All-damage lineups collapse fast without a front-row anchor like Williams holding the line.
    • Upgrading mid-tier heroes early: It feels productive, but those resources are better saved for S-tier units.
    • Treating any tier list as permanent: Last War gets balance updates. What works in Season 6 may shift by Season 7. Always check when a tier list was last updated.
    • Prioritizing CC before your core is set: Schuyler is powerful, but he does not fix a team that lacks damage or survivability.
